Children’s Literacy Seminars
Over half of Mozambique is under 16 years old. Most children have no access to books in their heart language. Where will they learn how to read? Early childhood literacy is key to a good education and a happy life. Think about it: if you come into school already knowing how to read and write, then school is a joy for you – your teacher loves you, your classmates are always asking you for help and you enjoy being there. Now think of school if you don’t know how to read and begin to fall behind the rest of your classmates. These children are easily discouraged and it is difficult for them to walk the miles it takes to get to school every day.
In order to develop a habit of literacy, our library has a specific children’s section for books and we are putting on litracy programs for children. These are small but important steps on the way to developing a habit of reading and self-learning among the next generation of Mozambicans.
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
– Matthew 19:14.
